Decorating your home isn’t always simple, which is why I put together a list of my ten top home decorating tips. If you ever need some inspiration or encouragement to get going, I hope these ideas will help you in your interior design quest!
1. Before you get started, you should always decide on your theme/color scheme and give yourself plenty of time to get used to it. Use the internet or your local home improvement store to give you some ideas, but whatever you do don’t buy anything yet. When you think you’ve made your decision, let it sit for a few days while you spend some time picturing how it will really look in your home. If you’re still happy with your decision then move ahead with the project.
2. Always keep receipts! It’s vital to keep the receipt for each item you buy, at least until you’ve completed the project. I’ve lost count of the number of times that I thought something was “perfect”, but when the time to actually install it came around, it was definitely not “perfect”!
3. If your project includes any painting, try to purchase all of the paint at one time. Even if you think you have it all in the first trip, make sure that you save the formula tags from the paint cans in case you end up needing more. If you do need more, make sure that you go to the same place and ask that they use the same machine that they used to mix the paint the first time.
4. Unless you are a diehard wallpaper fan then don’t use it! It can be a huge hassle. Wallpaper border can be great, but make sure that you follow the directions and, most importantly, cut and lay out all of the pieces before you start.
5. Shopping in the store can be time consuming, so before you go, make a list and break it down into different sections that correspond with areas of the store. Use the store website to help you find new bargains. Sections could include hardware, paint and so on.
6. Decorating your home might seem overwhelming, so instead of viewing it as a huge undertaking, just think of it as a few smaller projects. Don’t start too many of these smaller projects all at once; plan and finish them one by one before you move onto the next project on your list. This will give you a great sense of accomplishment!
7. One of the most basic home decorating tips, but also one of the most overlooked, is that nobody knows all the answers. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it! This is especially important when planning your project and, fortunately, the internet has some fantastic resources. Failing that, just visit your local home improvement store and consult the professionals there. They’re always willing to help and they have expert knowledge.
8. Every magazine has a website that has a huge store of information; it may take some time to find what you are looking for, but it is well worth the time. If you are decorating according to a “theme”, look for message boards or websites of groups of people who like the same theme. Even though the internet is an awesome source of information in the planning stages, it is also perfect for how-to assistance in the event that you get “stuck” in the middle of something or when a project didn’t turn out the way you thought it would.
9. Do you have trouble picking the right colors? If you don’t have a good eye for color, this could negatively impact the way your room turns out. If in doubt, get some advice from a friend who has a good sense of style. It will be well worth it.
10. Do not get discouraged! Almost any home improvement or decorating project has unforeseen pitfalls; they are just part of the project. If a part of the project does not turn out the way you thought, do not be afraid to just rip it apart and start that part of the project over again. Remember, you have to live in your house and if you leave a section in a state that you are not happy with, it is going to bother you every time you walk by it.
I hope that my home decorating tips give you the confidence you need to get going and to deal with any problems along the way. Just plan carefully and you’ll soon have the home you always wanted.
